The Junior Alhambra International Guitar Competition (CIGAJ) was first held as part of the Valencia International Guitar Festival, from 2013. A very fruitful collaborative relationship has been in place since that year, in which the search for quality and musical excellence has been a goal to work towards. This competition was set up as a result of two initiatives put in place a few years earlier by Manufacturas Alhambra in Muro de Alcoy. The initiatives aimed to encourage young guitar students from the surrounding area and nearby music schools, so they could have a local event where they could show what they had learned during their years of study. However, it was in 2013 when these events really took off at international level and, under the management of José Luis Ruiz del Puerto, the first CIGA for young people was planned in the city of Valencia.
This competition was set up with the aim of encouraging young generations of guitarists to study Spanish guitar, in the hope that it would motivate and stimulate them to continue taking their artistic careers to new heights.
Since its early days, Alhambra Guitarras has always been sensitive to the needs of young guitarists wanting to develop their artistic careers. Many projects have been put in place to ensure this happens. The CIGA (Alhambra Guitarras International Guitar Competition) has now been held for more than 30 years and in recent years the company has been involved as an active partner in promoting concerts and improving the professional careers of young guitarists.
At present, Alhambra Guitarras is advertising annual guitar study scholarships in schools and music conservatoires. These are just a few examples of how this philosophy of supporting young people is put into action.
Alhambra Guitarras is fully aware of the important contribution it can make to these new generations, so it continues to back exciting and necessary initiatives like the CIGAJ.
This competition already has an impressive track record. Seven editions have already been completed and during this period of time the competition has positioned itself as one of the most prestigious international events of its kind.
The top prizes are its best guarantee and proof of its international profile, showing that prizes based on promoting and creating concerts for these talented up-and-coming young people are turning out to be extremely positive. Winners such as Luis Alejandro García (Spain), Seung Ju Kim (South Korea), Julia Trintschuk (Germany), Stanislav Steshenko (Ukraine) and Seung Hyeok Choi (South Korea), are already strongly promising young players with a great artistic career ahead of them on the international guitar scene.
Working with young people, from the present and looking towards securing a better future for the guitar, will be one of the challenges Alhambra Guitarras will continue to tackle with all its energy and enthusiasm.
This new edition, full of new developments and adapted to the new technological era we live in, plus the concerts taking place around the competition, will bring days packed with guitar music to Valencia.
