Composing Music for Guitar: Basic Tips

By following a few tips, you can create your own original guitar music: - To start, it's helpful to stick to a specific form, such as the popular verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, chorus structure. You can also opt for specific scales and a limited number of chords (three to five). Far from limiting creativity, this allows you to focus on the most expressive aspects. - It's also a good idea to start with simple harmonies and easy-to-remember rhythms. The classical guitar is distinguished by how much it conveys with just a few chords. There's no need to complicate the melody to achieve a good song, as so many examples demonstrate. - A guitarist learns a lot about composition by listening attentively to music, trying to answer certain questions: What do you remember most about this song and why? What types of chords predominate? etc. - Songs with more major chords have more vitality, while minor chords provide a more melancholic character. The lyrics must be adapted to the emotions conveyed by the music and become memorable when the audience identifies with them. - Once a certain level of mastery is achieved, a capo opens the door to new possibilities. This accessory, suitable for both Spanish and electric guitars, reveals different sounds: more complex fingerings, riffs in different keys, or resonances similar to those of a mandolin, for example. Whatever system you choose to compose, you mustn't forget the most important thing: having fun and expressing your personality in what you do. Presenting your own creation to others is a source of pride for any guitarist.
