Playing the electric guitar: history and curiosities

Playing the guitar requires not only talent and passion, but also knowledge of the history of this stringed instrument. Below are some of the most fascinating facts about the electric guitar.

The History and Evolution of the Electric Guitar

Origins and Differences with the Classical Guitar

First of all, it is worth noting that, unlike the classical or Spanish guitar, which uses nylon strings, the electric guitar features steel strings. Although it is a relatively recent invention, dating back to 1931, it has profoundly shaped the history of guitar music and music in general—especially rock and roll, which symbolizes a rebellious attitude and whose journey would be unimaginable without the electric guitar.

Musical Influence and Historical Milestones

However, it hasn't only fueled rock and roll. It also marked a turning point in the history of funk. Furthermore, its rise never meant the rejection of other types of guitars: classicism and modernity go hand in hand through the electric guitar, as this instrument is also played by many guitarists and composers who love the Spanish guitar.

From a historical perspective, it is worth pointing out that the first electric guitar commercialized by Gibson was the ES-150 model, in 1936. Additionally, an electric guitar can be a true work of art: a Stratocaster guitar was auctioned and fetched 2.6 million dollars.

The Role of Jazz and the Arrival of the Amplifier

Initially, the electric guitar emerged out of a need for jazz musicians to enhance sound quality and volume. In fact, this instrument was created by jazz musician Les Paul.

Finally, the creation of the amplifier in 1935 was also key to guitar acoustics by incorporating an electrical system. Thanks to this amplified sound, jazz musicians were able to take on a more prominent role in orchestras due to the improved presence of their instruments.
